Why are we here? Why are we alive? We all want to feel like our lives have meaning. We want a purpose. As a Christian, I know what my purpose is.
“Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:37-40
I don’t always live out that purpose. I can be selfish, impatience, closed-off from God and others. So, this year, I want to focus on living out my purpose.
GotQuestions.org explains:
Our purpose in life, as God originally created man, is:
1) Glorify God and enjoy fellowship with Him
2) Have good relationships with others
3) Work
4) Have dominion over the earth
This means that I have to explore my purpose as:
1) A child of God and a member of the church
2) A daughter, sister, friend, and neighbor
3) An employee and a supervisor
4) An inhabitant and steward of God’s creation
We’re not all meant to be famous or achieve extraordinary things, but that doesn’t mean we have no purpose or value. If we ever doubt that, we need simply to remind ourselves of Ephesians 2:10:
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
