Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Fantasy novels are one of my top three favorite genres. I love getting lost in a completely different world. Brandon Sanderson’s Elantris is one of the best I’ve ever read. The fact that this was a debut novel blows my mind. The story, the characters, every little detail seems to be woven in with a purpose.

Everything had balance. Characters had flaws. They had incomplete knowledge. The reader also has an incomplete knowledge, but Sanderson peppers just enough hints to keep us aware and on our toes.

I loved every bit of this novel. It captured me from the beginning, and kept me involved to the very last page.

Elantris was my first Sanderson novel, but I will definitely read more of his work.

  1. Sanderson is my (recently) favorite author. I haven’t read Elantris – I first encountered his writing in the Wheel of Time which he finished for Robert Jordan, and those were…entertaining but sometimes hard to get through. But I don’t think those are Sanderson’s fault, because he had to follow Jordan’s outline/notes.
I read his Mistborn books next, and enjoyed those a lot.
The Reckoners trilogy is incredible, and completely separate from his other work. Most of Sanderson’s Fantasy is set in one big interconnected universe, which is cool – The Reckoners is its own thing, but is very good.

Now I’m reading his Stormlight books, which unfortunately will not be finished for a long time, but they are SO GOOD. My favorite fiction books of all time, by far. I’m on book four, Rhythm of War, and when I finish it I’ll have a long wait for the next one. So I already bought Warbreaker as my next read, and ordered Arcanum Unbound, a collection of short stories set in the Cosmere universe.
