One Word 365 (2021)

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. – Matthew 6:6

Prayer has always been something I struggle to do consistently. Private prayer. The kind of prayer spoken of in Matthew 6:6. I know it’s something I should do. I know that God gave us prayer for our own benefit, a gift to His children, but I still find maintaining a prayer life difficult. Sometimes I can’t find the words. Sometimes I don’t think about it. Sometimes, I just don’t feel like praying. Sometimes it’s a battle of the mind. Sometimes of the heart.

Yet, I want to pray.

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. – Colossians 4:2

I ask, as the Puritans did:

O God of the open ear,
Teach me to live by prayer as well as by providence,
for myself, soul, body, children, family, church;
Give me a heart frameable to thy will;
so might I live in prayer, and honour thee,
being kept from evil, known and unknown.

And so my One Word for 2021 is Prayer. What’s yours?
