When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper

Piper-DesireGod    We often look at other Christians and wonder where they get their joy. How can they be so calm and thankful in situations that make us want to get angry or scared, and lose hope? In this book, John Piper explains what true joy is. Joy in God. He explains that while joy is a gift, it is something we must fight for. In the world we live in, with all the things competing for our attention and adoration, not to mention our natural sinful nature, we must fight for joy in God. Piper goes on to explain how we fight for that joy.

This is one of those books that changed my thinking. It opened my eyes to something I never understood, and I didn’t know that I didn’t understand it. I knew that I was to love the Lord with my heart, mind, and soul, but this fight for joy brings it into focus. This is how we get there. Piper even lists some practical ways to find joy in places you don’t normally look.

I would suggest that every Christian read this book. It found me just when I needed it to, and I think the same would be said for so many others that read it.
